Most people love sunny days because they help to enjoy the warm climate and have a good time outside. Sometimes, the sky is covered with clouds and precipitation, and in some corners of the planet a sunny day is completely rare. How are sunny days calculated, and how many can they be in a row?
How to calculate the number of sunny days in a year
A sunny day is the time period after sunrise when there is no rainfall in the sky. Because of this, it seems that calculating their number per year is not difficult. But what to do with the day when there was both sun and precipitation, which gradually replaced each other?
To take into account the different nuances, two methods are used to calculate the number of sunny days:
- The day is taken into account, during which most of the time the weather was clear, without clouds. This technique is not very accurate, since there are no clear criteria for evaluation.
- The number of hours of sunshine per year is considered. This method is the most accurate, since it only takes into account the time when the sun, not covered by clouds, really was above the place for which the calculation was made. After counting, the number of hours is divided by 24 to convert to days.
Each point on the planet has a specific climate, depending on its location. Accordingly, the number of sunny days at different corners of the Earth will be different.
How many sunny days can there be in a row?
The number of sunny days in a row depends on many factors: season, the presence of impending rainfall, average temperature in the region, etc.
At the moment, the record for the number of sunny days is the city of St. Petersburg, located in the state of Florida, in the United States. Its inhabitants rejoiced in the sun for 768 days. This happened between February 9, 1967 and March 17, 1969. St. Petersburg has a tropical climate and the average temperature during the year is about 23 degrees. Therefore, it is not surprising that sunny weather is a frequent occurrence for this city.
However, there are places on the planet where the appearance of sunlight is a real rarity.
Interesting fact: in 2017 in Arkhangelsk there were only 12 sunny days, one for each month.
