In films where dinosaurs are present, they make frightening sounds, with each creator writing separate keys. But in most cases, the voices of ancient creatures are invented by sound engineers and do not have a fraction of historicity in themselves. And while dinosaurs have a voice on the screen, a logical question arises: did they really have one?
Did dinosaurs have a voice?
Unfortunately, a concrete answer to this question cannot be given. The vocal cords consist of elastic tissue covered with mucous membranes and simply attach to the bones. And when scientists find the next remains of a dinosaur, they cannot say for sure whether the creature had it, because the ligaments are not preserved in fossils.
But most experts are inclined to believe that creatures that lived hundreds of millions of years ago still had their own voice and could communicate with each other using sounds. This theory is based on two factors:
- The closest ancestors of dinosaurs - birds, perfectly use the speech apparatus for signaling.
- The skull structure of the creatures indicates that they had an inner ear. This means that they perfectly heard and perceived sounds. It is likely that the inner ear developed in the process of evolution, so that individuals of different species could give each other individual voice signals for communication.
These facts suggest that the dinosaurs really had vocal chords and could overlap.
Trying to play dinosaur voice
The sounds that creatures make in films are often created on a computer without any reliance on reliability. But in 2017, scientists decided to perform an experiment in which they tried to reproduce the roar of a tyrannosaurus.
To do this, they took as a basis the sounds of birds and reptiles, which are supposedly related, for example, alligators and bitterns, and arranged them by processing them accordingly. The fact that tyrannosaurs were larger and more massive than their distant ancestors was also taken into account. Because of this, the resulting sound was amplified several times.
As a result, literally it turned out a sweeping roar, spreading in space for kilometers around. After analysis and evaluation, the scientists came to the conclusion that the sound obtained could well be considered plausible.
Interesting fact: The reporters who attended the tyrannosaurus roar later wrote that it was the scariest sound they have ever heard.
Unfortunately, at the moment, scientists do not have enough technology to study the body structure of dinosaurs and say with confidence whether they had a voice or not. All conclusions are based only on theories and facts, and are considered separately for each type of creature. Perhaps on Earth there really existed such types of dinosaurs that could not make sounds.
